  • Wild Wales: Its People, Language and Scenery

    Borrow George

    eBook (, April 2, 2018)
Wales is a country interesting in many respects, and deserving of more attention than it has hitherto met with. Though not very extensive, it is one of the most picturesque countries in the world, a country in which Nature displays herself in her wildest, boldest, and occasionally loveliest forms. The inhabitants, who speak an ancient and peculiar language, do not call this region Wales, nor themselves Welsh. They call themselves Cymry or Cumry, and their country Cymru, or the land of the Cumry. Wales or Wallia, however, is the true, proper, and without doubt original name, as it relates not to any particular race, which at present inhabits it, or may have sojourned in it at any long bygone period, but to the country itself. Wales signifies a land of mountains, of vales, of dingles, chasms, and springs. It is connected with the Cumbric bal, a protuberance, a springing forth; with the Celtic beul or beal, a mouth; with the old English welle, a fountain; with the original name of Italy, still called by the Germans Welschland; with Balkan and Vulcan, both of which signify a casting out, an eruption; with Welint or Wayland, the name of the Anglo-Saxon god of the forge; with the Chaldee val, a forest, and the German wald; with the English bluff, and the Sanscrit palava—startling assertions, no doubt, at least to some; which are, however, quite true, and which at some future time will be universally acknowledged so to be.

  • Straight

    Boy George

Hardcover (Century (London), Jan. 1, 2005)
The autobiography of one of the UK’s most flamboyant and charismatic stars, guaranteed to shock, amuse and tantalize. In the thirteen years since the conclusion of the first part of his memoirs, Take It Like a Man, Boy George has reinvented himself. As that story closed, George was coming to terms with the fall-out from his drug addiction, the failure of his relationship with Jon Moss and the collapse of Culture Club. For lesser men this would have been the end, but for George it became the start of a period of startling personal and creative reinvention. Told with George’s trademark biting wit, brutal honesty and sparkling insight, this new book will bring his remarkable story up to date: from his role as a world-class DJ spearheading the dance music revolution in clubs all over the world, to his cutting-edge record label, and his role in the theatrical sensation Taboo.Tracing the momentous twists and turns of Boy George’s personal and artistic life over the last decade-and-a-half, Straight will not just be a riveting companion volume to the bestselling Take It Like a Man, but a truly fascinating book in its own right. From the Hardcover edition.

Excerpt from Lavengro: A New Edition Containing the Unaltered Text of the Original Issue; Some Suppressed Episodes Now Printed for the First Time; Ms. Variorum, Vocabulary and Notes by the Author of the Life of George BorrowIt is my firm belief that certain individuals possess an inherent power, fascination, over certain creatures, otherwise I should be unable to accot for many feats which I have witnessed, and, indeed, borne a share in, cc nected with the taming of brutes and reptiles. I have known a savage, a vicious mare, whose stall it was dangerous to approach, even when beari provender, welcome, nevertheless, with every appearance of pleasure, uncouth, wiry-headed man, with a frightfully seamed face, and an iron ho supplying the place of his right hand, one whom the animal had never se before, playfully bite his hair and cover his face with gentle and endeari kisses; and I have already stated how a viper would permit, without reser ment, one child to take it up in his hand, whilst it showed its dislike to t approach of another by the fiercest hissings. Philosophy can explain ma] strange things, but there are some which are a far pitch above her, and tl 1s one.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
